Some things you simply can’t forget. These items are needed to enter the country, stay safe, and travel smoothly:

  • Passport (with at least 6 months validity)
  • Visa confirmation, printed

  • Malaria medication

Clothing & Protection from the Elements

East Africa can be hot, humid or surprisingly chilly at night. Here’s what to wear:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing (neutral colours for safaris)
  • A jumper or fleece (evenings can get cool)
  • A rain jacket or poncho (especially during rainy season)
  • Sun hat or cap, sunglasses and lip balm (sun can be intense)
  • Swimwear (some lodges have pools and you might visit hot springs)
  • High socks and hiking boots for trekking
  • Flip-flops or sandals for showers or short walks

Pro tip: Roads can be dusty or muddy — bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Toiletries & Personal Care

Most accommodations provide some basics, but it’s wise to carry:

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Wet wipes or small washcloth
  • Insect repellent with DEET or Icardine
  • Quick-dry travel towel
  • Travel-size first aid kit
  • Basic meds: paracetamol, antihistamines, ORS
  • Medical passport (especially if bringing prescription medicine)

Bags, Gadgets & Safari Tools

Good gear makes travelling easier:

  • Duffel bag or soft suitcase (easier to load into safari vehicles)
  • Small daypack or backpack for daily use
  • Powerbank for long drives or hikes
  • Flashlight or headlamp, with extra batteries
  • Travel adapter (Type G – UK-style plug)
  • Binoculars (especially for birders!)
  • Camera or phone with extra SD cards
  • Notebook and pen — for journaling or tracking wildlife

Leave space for souvenirs. Most travellers say they packed too much!
